How to Measure Internal Fretwork or Internal Friezework for a Replacement

One of the most common questions we receive at Karem Woodcraft is: “How do I measure my existing verandah fretwork so you can make a replacement?”
Verandah fretwork is also commonly referred to as friezework, particularly on Victorian, Federation, Colonial, Queenslander and heritage homes. Whether you call it fretwork, friezework, Victorian lacework, decorative verandah trim or heritage timber fretwork, Karem Woodcraft can manufacture replacement panels to match most existing designs using a few simple measurements and photographs.
Karem Woodcraft manufactures Australian-made timber fretwork and friezework and supplies Australia-wide. We offer both a full fretwork matching service and a large range of standard fretwork and friezework designs.

The Three Measurements We Need
Measuring verandah fretwork is usually very simple. For most jobs we only require a few key measurements. Typical verandah fretwork panels range from approximately 1200mm to 3600mm wide and between 250mm and 600mm high, depending on the house, opening size and style.
1. Post-to-Post Width
Measure from inside face of post to inside face of post. This measurement gives us the overall width available for the fretwork or friezework panel.
2. Side Drop for Arched Fretwork
If the fretwork is arched, measure how far the fretwork drops down beside each post. This is the side drop. This measurement is common for arched Victorian fretwork, Federation fretwork and traditional Australian verandah friezework.
3. Centre Drop for Arched Fretwork
Measure how far the fretwork drops down in the middle of the opening. These three measurements allow us to accurately reproduce most existing verandah fretwork and friezework designs.
What If My Fretwork Is Straight?
For straight fretwork panels, simply provide the post-to-post width and the overall fretwork height, together with photographs of the design.
The Best Option: Send Us the Original Fretwork
The most accurate way to match existing fretwork is to carefully remove the fretwork panel and deliver it to Karem Woodcraft. Having the original fretwork allows us to accurately copy the overall size, scroll patterns, decorative details, timber thickness, arches, curves and heritage features.
If the original fretwork or friezework can be removed safely, sending us the physical sample provides the highest level of accuracy.
If You Cannot Remove the Fretwork
If the fretwork cannot be removed, we can usually work from measurements and photographs. Please provide clear photos of the fretwork together with the measurements listed above.
Photos We Need
- A full photo of the entire verandah opening.
- Close-up photos of the fretwork pattern.
- Photos taken straight on.
- Photos showing any damaged sections.
- Photos beside a tape measure where possible.
The more photographs provided, the easier it is for us to match your existing timber fretwork or friezework.
